Gig Totem

How Boring.ai helped Gig Totem turn one poster into a complete live music listing, search result, ticket record and social campaign in under 30 seconds.

Gig Totem logo

Gig Totem is a live music discovery platform built around a simple idea: fans should not have to check a venue website, a promoter feed, three ticketing platforms and a social post just to find out what is on.

The hard part is not the website. It is the data. Grassroots gigs are often announced as posters. The useful details are trapped in pixels: artist names, dates, venues, support acts, ticket prices and ticket providers. Turning that into a clean listing used to mean running a content management system by hand. For small events, that admin is rarely worth the cost.

Boring.ai changed the economics.

The challenge

Gig Totem needed listings that were wide, accurate and current across many venues, promoters and ticket providers. Manual entry would have created a ceiling straight away.

Every listing needed structured event data, a useful artist page, ticket information, search indexing and social promotion. That is a lot of repetitive work for one gig. It is even worse when the source material is a poster, not a neat spreadsheet.

The product only works if the boring work becomes almost invisible.

The automation

The core automation uses the OpenAI Vision API to read gig posters and extract the details that matter: dates, artists, venues, ticket prices and other event information. That data is then used to complete the listing form automatically, ready to publish as a clean, searchable event page.

What used to be manual CMS labour becomes a fast review step. The same pattern applies well beyond live music. Any business that receives important information as images, PDFs or documents can turn that material into structured records, forms and workflows.

For Gig Totem, one poster can now become:

  • a complete event listing
  • an indexable page for Google
  • a record in the internal search index
  • structured venue, artist, date and ticket data
  • social posts for Facebook, Instagram and Threads

Listing an event on Gig Totem now takes under 30 seconds on average.

Enriching the listing automatically

A useful music discovery page needs more than the bare event data. Gig Totem also uses automation to enrich artist pages.

The system finds creative commons images and adds them to the relevant pages where available. It also writes short artist copy, including genre, context and touring information, so fans can understand who is playing without promoters having to produce fresh copy every time.

Together, those artist image and copy automations led to 60% SEO growth. More complete pages gave search engines better content to understand and gave gig-goers a better reason to stay.

Keeping ticket data current

Gig listings quickly go stale if ticket links break or availability changes. Gig Totem knows which provider is attached to an event, so automation can look up ticket links and stock information from the relevant provider.

That keeps listings fresher, reduces dead ends for fans and helps Gig Totem cut across siloed ticket platforms. Gig-goers get a clearer view of what is available, without needing to know which provider originally sold the ticket.

Social promotion from the same source

Promoters also need reach. The same poster that creates the listing can is used to automatically create and publish social posts across Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

That saves promoters valuable time and helps raise the visibility of grassroots live music events. Instead of entering the same details into several different systems, the poster becomes the starting point for the whole promotion workflow. This enables even indie promoters to keep up with the marketing departments of their larger peers.

The result

Gig Totem can publish broad, accurate and searchable live music listings without building a large manual content team. Grassroots venues and promoters get a faster route to visibility. Fans get better information. The site gets more complete data, richer artist pages and fresher ticket links.

That is the real value of automation: it takes something that is not worth doing manually and makes it central to the product. Running a CMS, updating fields, chasing links and posting social content are all boring tasks. Done by hand, they are a cost centre. Done automatically, they become the reason the product can exist.

For Gig Totem, boring automation enables the product to be wider, more accurate and more useful than a manually maintained directory could ever be.
